A Multi-sensory Approach to Learning Letters and Sounds
Sandpaper letters engage children in using three of their senses: visual, auditory, and tactile. When teaching using this tool introduce no more than three letters at a time. First, demonstrate how to make the letter, tracing it with your index and middle fingers while making the corresponding letter sound, then invite the child to do the same providing hand-over-hand support if required.
Create Muscle Memory of the Shape and Sound of the Letter
The act of tracing the letter with fingers on a textured surface develops muscle memory of the shape and the corresponding sound. This is significant because when there are multiple senses engaged in a learning activity it creates greater neural connections in the brain and therefore a stronger and more meaningful learning experience.
